Can tell from the outset that this is for a horror film because of the whole mise-en-scene of the poster. The dark dreary desolate background that has minimal lighting emphasises the genre of the film. It creates an uneasy feel to the nature of the film and gives the audience a sense of fear even before they have seen the film.

The quote from Time Out saying it is "the scariest film of the year" reinforces the fear of the audience and also makes them want to see it more to see if it is actually the scariest film. it creates more publicity for the film as good reviews result in more people going to see the film and see for themselves if these reviews are accurate.

The meaning of the word conjuring is: the performance of tricks which are seemingly magical, typically involving sleight of hand. This emphasises the paranormal characteristics of horror films and the old fashioned doll in the poster is a depiction of the magical theme to the film however it adds a sense of terror.

By the doll being the only thing that is facing the camera it makes it the main focus of the poster. Due to the fact that is it a child's doll and it smiling would typically connote happiness however the sinister smile on this doll represents the supernatural and would make the audience feel on edge. As the doll is looking at the camera it gives the impression that it has turnt its head by itself and makes it look like the doll is more alive than the human in the chair.

The human in the chair looks almost lifeless and disheveled therefore it could create enigmas as to why this is. As well as this through the eyeline shot from the doll it gives the impression that the doll i in control and this makes the audience feel uneasy. As well as this the human is also in a rocking chair which connotes maternal instincts as they are usually used to rock a baby to sleep. However in this case there is no baby but it is as though the doll is acting as the baby and therefore is give a sense that it is alive which suggest that it is the object which disturbs the normality of everyday life.
