Influences/styles/effects we like- Both

The video above shows various clips from three trailers: Annabelle, the Woman in Black 2 and Mama. They show some effects which I like and would consider incorporating in our trailer. The first clip shows a conventional establishing shot of a house. The slow zoom towards the house is an effect I like because it creates an uneasy feeling for the audience from the outset.

The next clip is a title effect that I like, paticularly the background of the title where blood is running down the dark wallpaper.

The slow zoom onto the old doll is an effect I would use if we chose to do a story that consisted of using an old fashion doll that was possessed. This slow zoom adds suspense to the film. There is not a jump scare here but the audience is on edge and we are frightened particularly because of the zoom that shows blood dripping onto the doll.

The music in each clip differs however they all aim to create the same atmosphere in the film.

I like the next clip where the victim is looking under the bed for something abnormal and in the top corner of the screen we can see a hand creeping down onto the shoulder of the victim and shows the contrast between normality and abnormality.

The final clip is an effect I would like to create and I am able to do it in after effects where you can create a demon face. This can be used as the jump scare at the end of the trailer becasue the title will be shown an dthe audience will not expect anything else to be shown.

The Woman in Black 2 title is good because the title emerges from fog amongst the forest which creates a sense of the unknown.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

(0:02), from paranormal acitivty, there is the effects used on the text as it zooms in towards the screen, becoming closer to the viewer and clearer and bigger to read, I find the effect useful as it makes the text seem less boring to read and in some way forces you to read it as it's coming close to you.

(0:05), in the trailer for paranormal acitivty the use the effect of showing clips from a previous viewing of the film itself, showing the audiences reactions as they were watching the film, personally I find this quite effective as it makes the viewers watching the trailer know that if other people were reacting scared, then they are going to be the same.

(0:06), here there is the use of the words in the style of a fuzz, as if a camera or telivision is breaking - displaying different coloured lines in a fuzz.

THE CONJURING

(0:13) Another effect used in the trailer for The Conjuring is the use of a hand held camera, it builds and creates more tension to what is on screen and makes it seem more realistic and as if you were there. Throughout the whole of the trailer and especially in this section, it is filmed by a hand held camera, giving the look and feel of whats on screen a complete different perspective to that if it was on a tripod - it wouldn't allow as much movement, and with the hand held camera it enables us to follow a specific characters actions. It gives a 'shaky' effect to what is being shown on screen and it grabs the attention of the audience more as we feel as though we can imagine what it is like being there as we see their movement more clearly, and can sense the pace and tension.

(0:21) is from the film The Conjuring - I have selected this particular clip from the trailer as it involves an effect that I liked - a slow zoom towards a house/building, and what makes it more effective is that the shot only lasts for 2 seconds, therefore it is short and quick to pass but it catches your eye.

INSIDIOUS

(0:24), this clip is from the trailer for the film insidious, the effect used here is a focus pull, I like this effect as it changes your focus from one main character to another, and also gives a sense of tension.
